One of my favorite parts of summer is having extra time to relax and binge watch my favorite shows and movies. Okay, I’ll admit that I stay up till ungodly hours throughout the school year due to Sex and the City marathons, but at least those are acceptable during vacation! I’ve put Carrie & Samantha & Miranda & Charlotte on the back burner for now in favor of new and beloved shows of which I’ve become a true fan.
Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas is a new HBO show I love after watching an episode focusing on the school to prison pipeline and solutions to fix the criminal justice system. Cenac brings thorough research with a humorous edge to social issues affecting America today. While not the most lighthearted tv pick, I will tune in to each episode when I want to learn something new!
Jane the Virgin is my completely overdue telenovela obsession I should have watched years ago. Each episode is hilarious (mostly due to my twin Rogelio de la Vega) and romantic and I can’t stop binge watching it! I love seeing strong, beautiful Latina women leading their own individual plots and the focus on family and love conquering all. I’m Team Michael forever but also Team Brogelio (aka Rogelio + Michael + Rafael).
Younger has been a favorite among the women in my family and, even after five seasons, still remains our most loved cable drama. I obviously love showrunner Michael Patrick King’s work (the genius behind SATC) and the modern tale of Liza Miller’s secret identity mixed with her love triangle between hot boss Charles and young, fun Josh is a sweet homage to SATC’s best moments.
Queer Eye is my favorite tv discovery of the year as I can’t get enough of my babies Jonathan, Karamo, Tan, Bobby, and Antoni (ugh, Antoni I swoon) while they change the lives of every disheveled straight man they encounter. Season 2 premiers next week and I’m excited to meet each new character and see how the boys change the world one fabulous step at a time!
