Thanks to extraordinary recruiting talent on the Baylor Men’s Basketball coaching roster (specifically noting Director of Recruiting Operations Jason Smith), the Bears received a remarkable commitment from the top uncommitted senior in the US: G VJ Edgecombe! Edgecombe originally hails from the Bahamas, but attends Long Island Lutheran in New York. The 5th-ranked 6’5 2022-23 Gatorade Player of the Year is Baylor MBB’s highest-ranked recruit since former C Isaiah Austin committed to the Bears in 2012 (Austin was ranked No. 3 in the country). Edgecombe is averaging 18.1 points this season as a 5-star athlete. In the 2022-23 season, he averaged 15.5 points, 5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.

According to Rivals, Edgecombe received offers from Alabama, Baylor, Charleston, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, North Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Tennessee, Texas Tech, UCF, Villanova, and Wake Forest. He visited Florida on September 15, 2023; Baylor on October 6, 2023; Duke on October 20, 2023; Kentucky on October 27, 2023; Alabama on November 3, 2023; and Florida State on November 10, 2023.

“Baylor has a winning culture, a great staff and head coach. Coach Drew is a genuine person; he has built an incredible program,” he told ESPN. “There was a deep connection with Baylor. They have a strong foundation of faith, and there was also a spiritual connection. That was important to me.” Edgecombe commented on his visits to the final schools on his lists and when it came to Baylor, he said, “On my visit, it felt like home. I got a feeling in my heart, and I just knew. I love their environment.”

Edgecombe selected Baylor, Duke, and Kentucky as his final three choices and announced his commitment to the Bears during an ESPN game broadcast this past weekend. According to ESPN, “He is the third ESPN 100 prospect in Baylor’s 2024 class, joining Jason Asemota (No. 29) and Robert Wright III (No. 37). The Bears will also welcome 7-foot junior college transfer Noah Boyed next fall. This is the fourth straight class Baylor has landed a five-star prospect, following Ja’Kobe Walter (No. 8 in 2023) {read about him in this post!}, Keyonte George (No. 6 in 2022) and Kendall Brown (No. 17 in 2021).” Edgecombe’s commitment to the Bears catapulted their 2024 class from No. 27 in the country into the top 10.
