The Denman Brush Is My Curl Savior

Denman brush curls

It seems like I’m almost always talking about different methods and tools I use to try and perfect my curls and each time, I proclaim that my hair is in its best state yet. However, I truly believe that my curls are exactly where I’ve always wanted them to be and that’s all thanks to the Denman brush. The Denman brush was created in 1938 after John Denman Dean wanted to create a tool that would help his curly-haired sister style her unruly mane. More than eight decades later and the brush is one of the curl community’s most beloved styling items, which is why I wanted to try it out for myself. I discovered the brush after watching numerous videos of women whose ringlets I lusted after styling their hair into perfect curls. In order to achieve similar locks on my own head, I spray my head with the Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Leave In Treatment and brush out my curls with the Wet brush (Denman brushes are not good for detangling). Sectioning off my hair into three large portions, I carefully brush through with the Denman brush and smooth quarter-size dollops of my most beloved La Bella Extreme Sport Styling Gel down the lengths. The key steps are to use the Denman brush to evenly distribute the gel throughout my hair, while also creating clumps and maximum definition. After all the gel is actively coating my hair, I take 2 inch sections and slowly brush through them while twisting the brush 180 degrees, allowing the teeth to act as a finger coil. Once I pull the Denman brush through the ends, I briefly shake the section to encourage my curl pattern and repeat throughout my hair. After the curly clumps are formed, I flip my head upside down and scrunch each ringlet with a t-shirt before diffusing with my Xtava 1875 Watt Pro Hair Dryer with the Black Orchid Large Hair Diffuser attachment. Approximately 30 minutes later and I’m left with extremely bouncy coils that last for up to 5 days without excessive separation, although after a full day’s wear, you can see the frizz begins to poke through. Despite a bit of flyaways, I truly adore how my curls look and feel, even after a week’s worth of living, thanks to the Denman brush!
