It’s been exactly nine months since I last shared an original poem and up until today, I had no intention of publicly displaying this one. But then I thought, “I already talk about every other part of my life on this website, so why not present my deepest darkest poetry secrets?” This piece, “On Letting Go” is extremely personal to me and it’s the first poem I wrote in which I allowed myself to write about actual events that occurred in my own life. I remember scribbling each line in a notebook during my American Realism and Naturalism class last semester (truly the devil’s course) and every word poured out of me as I transported myself back to the specific moments. “On Letting Go” was inspired by Olivia Gatwood’s works, especially her piece, “The Scholar” (video version here). I’m definitely not Olivia, but if she can be as vulnerable and honest with her poems, then I think I can try too.
