New Neutral Basics for the Beginning of the Year

ASOS Design top, Topshop jeans, J.Crew shoes (similar here), Madewell bag

Can you recall the last time you saw me wearing a pair of jeans that weren’t my true blue American Eagle ones (most recently seen here)? One of the most difficult parts about adjusting my life to my weight loss is that I now have to purchase lots of pieces for a brand new wardrobe (I don’t want this statement to sound like I’m complaining or attention seeking!). I obviously love shopping more than most other activities, but buying fresh pieces has been a budget killer as of late. In order to shop in a way where I don’t end up with a closet full of pieces I’ll hate in a few months, I’ve been looking mainly for new neutral basics I can rotate weekly with the ones I already have. Some of my favorite new neutral closet items I bought are from Brandy Melville, which is the topic of a longer conversation about fatphobia, whiteness, etc. I like Brandy Melville’s tops because they’re the epitome of new neutral basics that are usually solid (or with small patterns), cropped, and go with all other pieces. I’ve also been shopping online at ASOS for more affordable tops and dresses while avoiding the overly trendy styles. I bought this ASOS Design square neckline cropped black top that fits me like a glove and is extremely comfy because I knew I could wear it with jeans, under a sleeveless dress, or tucked into a skirt. ASOS sells great basics that won’t go out of style and are cheap enough to stock up on! Circling back to my American Eagle jeans question, I steered myself away from the AE brand and picked up these Topshop Jamie jeans from Nordstrom a couple weekends ago and I adore them! My AE jeans started to stretch out easily (they were considered jeggings after all) and lost their shape too quickly for my liking. Although they fit me perfectly around my waist and thighs, I needed a thicker and sturdier pair of jeans and that’s where this Jamie pair comes in. These jeans are the most essential new neutral basic because they’re a slightly lighter wash, they hit right at my belly button (a little lower than my AE pair), and their fabric is T H I C K. I know these jeans won’t lose their shape after one wear and they feel like they’re made a little better. I styled the simple outfit with my favorite pair of green leather flats from J.Crew, which I lovingly refer to as my “library shoes” and my always reliable brown Madewell tote!
