Poetry is often seen as difficult to understand, scary or intimidating. Shakespeare’s sonnets often come to mind when people say they don’t like poetry. However, when old English is the only ‘definition’ of poetry, the scope of writing must expand. Spoken word or slam poetry is my favorite. I love witnessing an artist share their craft with emotion and grit. Sarah Kay, Phil Kaye and Jamaica Osorio are some of my most revered poets as they speak truth and honesty through their words. I hope you all appreciate these poems as much as I do.
