It’s no secret that I’m a passionate fan of musicals (Les Miserables is my all time favorite) and this decade’s breakout play is Hamilton– the story of Alexander Hamilton and his journey from the Caribbean to a new life in New York City. The play was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda who stars as the title character. Miranda has had a fascination with Hamilton from the time he wrote a paper about the former president in high school. He read the biography “Alexander Hamilton” and decided to write songs and eventually a musical based on the work. Miranda used his hip-hop expertise to develop an unique soundtrack similar to that of In the Heights (the first play he wrote and starred in). He also uses mainly Latino and African-American actors, changing the idea of who a typical Broadway actor is. Hamilton is currently playing on Broadway.
