Over the past two years, my main beauty focus has been establishing a skincare routine to clear and brighten my skin, which, before 2020, was a fairly easy process. I narrowed my basic routine down to four products (which I wrote about here): The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Gentle Facial Wash, Pixi Glow Tonic To-Go, Glossier Super Pure Serum, and the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Sadly, my favorite Glossier Super Pure was sold out at the beginning of 2020 and wasn’t restocked until back in May following a huge rebrand of all the Glossier serums. Because my skin responded so well to the niacinimide and zinc combination in Super Pure, I immediately saw a difference in my texture and tone once I ran out of the product and couldn’t repurchase it. Enter The Ordinary Niacinimide 10% + Zinc 1%—a cheaper alternative to Glossier Super Pure that features the same ingredients in what I believe is also the same amounts—a serum that, paired with my favorite Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Pack Detoxifying Face Mask, helped tone down the acne I suddenly and consistently developed since the pandemic began. However, after Super Pure and the other three Glossier serums were reformulated and restocked, I had to buy a new bottle to see if it differed from the original version (“OV”). The physical characteristics of new Super Pure are the same as OV—liquidy, almost water-like with a subtle scent. In regard to how my skin has reacted to the serum, it might be the new formula or the stress of being in a pandemic while the world feels like it’s ending, but I don’t think this version of Super Pure has helped decrease my acne or lighten any pigmentation as much as the OV I used to love did. Of course I’m still going to apply Super Pure on top of my toner and under moisturizer every day and night, but I haven’t achieved the results I once had, which is slightly disappointing. Hopefully should the world stop being a hellscape and we be allowed outside, my skin will clear up thanks to Super Pure in combination with my other skincare favorites. I can only dream of having my 2018-2019 skin again soon!
