Only two weeks after the No. 6 Baylor Women’s Basketball team (25-2,17-1) won their 11th straight regular season Big 12 championship, the Lady Bears defeated West Virginia 76-50 to earn their 11th total Big 12 tournament title (as always, the shining star of Baylor Athletics every single year)! This 11th total tournament title increases the Lady Bears’ championship sum to 23 within Head Coach Kim Mulkey’s 21 seasons at Baylor. According to Baylor Athletics’ Jerry Hill (papa), “This was Baylor’s 11th Big 12 Championship title and the 10th time the Lady Bears have swept the regular-season and tournament titles in the same season. They have also strung together 17-straight wins since a loss to Iowa State on Jan. 16 when they returned from a 12-day COVID pause.” Baylor WBB wasn’t only playing for the players on the court today as they acknowledged last season’s senior athletes who were unable to participate in postseason play as COVID shut down the country before the conference tournaments. F Lauren Cox (the fourth player in Baylor WBB history to earn four All-America selections in the same season), G Juicy Landrum, G Te’a Cooper, and C Erin DeGrate never had a chance to help usher their team to another tournament title or NCAA final run, which devastated last year’s squad. Thankfully, on the backs of junior C Queen Egbo and senior Gs DiJonai Carrington and Moon Ursin, the Lady Bears got the 11th total tournament title they would’ve vied for last year. Egbo notched her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points, 11 boards, 5 blocks, and one steal. Carrington had 14 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal, and Ursin recorded her own double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 steal. Congratulations to the always reliable and extraordinarily accomplished Lady Bears on their 11th total Big 12 tournament title!
