Baylor MBB’s Walter on Jerry West Award Top-10

Ja'Kobe Walter on Jerry West Award Top-10

Baylor Men’s Basketball star freshman G Ja’Kobe Walter continues his dominant inaugural season run by adding additional season honors with his most recent accolade being named to the Jerry West Award Top-10! Walter was ranked 17th in the ESPN 100 for 2023 and listed as the second best player in Texas, and the Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year has amassed quite the collection of honors with the following on his record: Jerry West Award Preseason Top-20, Big 12 Player of the Week (11/13), NABC Player of the Week (11/14), Wooden Award Preseason Top-50, NIT Season Tip-Off All-Tournament Team, Wooden Award Midseason Top-25, and Jerry West Award Top-10. His Big 12 Player of the Week recognition, according to Baylor Athletics’ Jerry Hill (papa), made him “the first freshman to garner Big 12 Player of the Week honors in program history. Walter is the 38th different player in BU history to be named conference player of the week and the first since Adam Flagler in February of 2023.” The Jerry West Top-10 award honors the nation’s best shooting guard, and Walter is the only freshman athlete on the list, joining Kansas’ Kevin McCullar and Houston’s LJ Cryer (formerly of Baylor Men’s Basketball) as representatives from the Big 12 Conference. Baylor Athletics noted “Baylor’s five players on the top-10 list in the last four years are the most in the country. Last season, Adam Flagler and Keyonte George made Baylor the only team in the country with multiple representatives. Prior to that, Flagler was named to the list in 2022, while Macio Teague was a top-10 candidate during Baylor’s title run in 2021.” Walter leads the Bears with 15.2 points per game, currently shooting 40.6% (82-202) of field goals, 35.2% (37-105) of 3s, and 85.7% (66-77) of free throws with 30 assists, 4 blocks, and 20 steals.
