A Just Society Legislation by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

A Just Society by AOC

I’ve previously written about my love for NY-14 Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez since her incredible Congressional election win last November, and her leadership has taken off ever since. As one of the four members of bold and brilliant “The Squad” alongside Reps Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, AOC has been unapologetic in her time on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, through her active outreach in her districts, and through social media. She’s presented inspired, progressive resolutions such as The Green New Deal and her new legislation: A Just Society– a legislative package that seeks to boldly address economic injustices and improve the well-being of all Americans, especially those in lower socioeconomic classes. According to AOC’s website,

“A Just Society aims to ensure that we are on a path towards shared prosperity for all. A just society provides a living wage, safe working conditions, and healthcare. A just society acknowledges the value of immigrants to our communities. A just society guarantees safe, comfortable, and affordable housing. By strengthening our social and economic foundations, we are preparing ourselves to embark on the journey to save our planet by rebuilding our economy and cultivate a just society.”

The legislative package contains six bills that would secure housing justice for people who are renting homes, provide more access to a financial and social safety net for formerly incarcerated people and undocumented immigrants, update the standards set for federal contractors and workers, modernize the poverty line, and ratify the U.N.’s International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Although it seems like the package is full of lofty ideas, AOC is one of the few politicians in Washington who is actively pursuing justice for all and working toward a more equitable society. I can’t wait to see these bills come to fruition and what AOC and the rest of The Squad will work on next!
