2024 All-Big 12 Honors for Baylor MBB

2024 All-Big 12 Awards

Last October before the college basketball season aka the (tied for) most exciting time of the year began, I wrote about the Baylor Men’s Basketball trio of freshman G Ja’Kobe Walter, senior G RayJ Dennis, and senior F Jalen Bridges receiving preseason All-Big 12 awards for their anticipated performances. Walter was named preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year and all three received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades. In that post, I wrote about their contributing statistics and production and said “Walter, as one of the trio vouching to collect preseason honors, is only the sixth McDonald’s All-American in Baylor Men’s Basketball history, leading the Link Academy Lions to a 24-1 record in the 2022-23 season. In Bridges’ one and only season with the Bears so far, he made 125 of 247 field goals (50.6%), 36 of 111 3s (32.4%), and 63 of 81 free throws (77.8%) with 192 boards, 35 assists, 35 blocks, 30 steals, and 349 points for an average of 10.3 points per game. Bridges also made a Big 12 Championship record 7 of 8 made 3s (87.5%) in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals. Dennis transferred from Toledo after last season where he was named unanimous MAC player of the Year averaging 19.5 points and 5.8 assists per game. Baylor Athletics also notes that Dennis ‘scored in double figures in all 35 games to finish second in school history with 683 points, while his 202 assists were third-most in Toledo history.'” And only days after concluding regular season competition, the Baylor Men’s Basketball team had 5 athletes collecting 2024 All-Big 12 honors for their play!

Walter collected the 2024 All-Big 12 version of his preseason accolade by being named Big 12 Freshman of the Year along with Dennis, Bridges, redshirt sophomore G Langston Love, and freshman C Yves Missi all being named to the honoree list. Walter’s pick as Big 12 Freshman of the Year gives the Bears their second consecutive season of earning both the preseason and postseason award. In the season, Walter shot 38.2% (130-340) of field goals, 33.9% (65-192) of 3s, and 82.3% (130-158) of free throws with 139 rebounds (averaging 4.5/game), 48 assists (1.5/game), 5 blocks, 35 steals, and 455 points (14.7/game).
